While we were initially hopeful that we would be able to launch our in person program this year, the introduction and subsequent extension of physical distancing guidelines made it clear that we would have to cancel our 2020 FAB Girls 5K Challenge Program and FAB 5K Community Challenge.
As we reflected on the goals of our in person program and the positive impact it’s had on our participants, we shifted our focus to the idea of offering a virtual program. With awe-inspiring commitment and collaboration between our staff, volunteer coaches and our board of directors, we redesigned our program and have launched/ have been successfully running a virtual version.
Our volunteer coaches are connecting with FAB girls via Zoom weekly to create a safe and supportive space for girls to connect with each another and develop important life skills that will help them through this difficult time and beyond. We’re helping girls reframe challenging situations they encounter in isolation by creating positive affirmations, we’re encouraging girls to set daily goals to create a sense of accomplishment and confidence and we’re encouraging daily movement through fun group and independent challenges. While we’re not training for our usual 5K run, the overarching goals of our in person and virtual programs are the same:
- Encourage girls to live a healthy and active lifestyle
- Develop goal setting skills and confidence that will help girls live an empowered life
- Develop the 5 C’s of Positive Youth Development (confidence, caring, connection, character, competence)
We are grateful and proud of our volunteer coaches and staff for stepping up to the challenge of change to give girls an opportunity to connect and grow.
We are currently planning to offer our virtual program again in 2021 but this will be dependent on how the situation evolves over time.
